Atlantic Wreckfish (aka Atlantic Stone Bass, Chernia) are a deep-water marine fish offering the flavor of a grouper with the firm texture of swordfish. They are low in fat, while being high in protein, B vitamins and minerals (including thyroid-healthy selenium). They love to congregate in caves and shipwrecks (hence their name).
Wreckfish are sustainable species with what is believed to be a very healthy population. Their fishery is tightly controlled, with an annual quota divided between only a few fishing boats. The skilled crew of these boats fish exclusively for wreckfish, and only use vertical hook and lines, minimizing bycatch and environmental impact. Wreckfish produce large numbers of offspring when they breed, further ensuring sustainable numbers.
Wreckfish season is closed by regulators from January 15th through April 15th to allow the fish to spawn.
Because wreckfish are very large, their fillets are sold as portions rather than as whole sides.
Note: Because of the small number of fishermen and its tendency not to bite when the water temperature gets too low, availability of wreckfish can be sporadic. You are welcome to contact us prior to placing your order, and we will see if it is currently available.
