Origin: Sonora, Mexico

Evolved to be picked up and carried about by birds in order to spread its seeds, the wild Tepin chile (aka bird eye pepper, chiltepin) is small and berry-shaped. Don’t let its size fool you, these cute little chilies pack a serious punch.

Though it still being debated, many people feel that tepin chiles offer more brief heat then other varieties, fading away after an intense period rather than smouldering.

Storage: Store tepin chilies in an air-tight container in a cool, dark cupboard.

Shelf Life: Tepin chilies will retain their potency for at least a year, but likely much longer.

Reconstitute dried tepin chilies and add to soups, sauces, and other dishes. They can be toasted (optional) slightly and added while still dried. You can also grind them into chili powder using a spice grinder or blender for use as is or in your own spice blends and rubs. Tepins work especially well in posoles, chilis, salsas and stews.
