The ghost chili (aka Bhut Jolokia, Naga Jolokia, Naga Morich) is so named for its "ghostly" bite. It has officially been recognized as one of the very hottest chile peppers, but also possesses a slight surprising sweetness and smokiness behind all that heat. The perfect gift for the hardcore chilehead in your life, this pepper is only reserved for those who wish to add true fire to their dishes.
Because these chilies are wild, their heat can vary considerably from chile to chile.
We also offer pre-ground ghost chili powder.
Note: Packages may include small fragments of rope, which the chilies are tied to while being dried. Discard any rope fragments before cooking
Caution: These chilies are extremely hot.
- Wear gloves while handling chilies. Wash hands thoroughly before touching eyes & sensitive tissue.
- If grinding, avoid inhaling powder. Eye & respiratory protection recommended.
- In the event of inhalation, move to open air to clear lungs.
- In the event of burning eyes, flush with eye wash. For burning skin, wash thoroughly with soap & water.
- If irritation persists, seek medical aid.
Storage: Store ghost chilies in an air-tight container in a cool, dark cupboard.
Shelf Life: Ghost chilies will retain their potency for at least a year, but likely much longer.
Ghost Chile Peppers are extremely hot, use them sparingly!
For most recipes you’ll want to rehydrate them with hot water before adding them to dishes (see tutorial link below). Once your ghost chilies have been rehydrated, you can remove their stems and seeds before using them as you would fresh chilies. Add a little to fresh salsa, sauces, chili and anything else you want to start a 12 alarm fire with.
Ghost chilies can also be used to create exciting condiments and cocktail ingredients. To give your cocktails a bang and daring mystique, try infusing vodka or other liquor with ghost chilies (ghost chile vodka recipe). They can also be used to infuse vinegar (chile infused vinegar recipe) that you can use to add a hot and sour zing to any dish.
