Katy not only keeps the rest of the staff entertained with her humor and crazy antics, she also runs the show. The longest person (other than Justin) employed in the Seattle office, Katy has been present every step of the way in the conception of Marx Foods.
While attending the University of Washington, Katy began working for the Marx Companies as a researcher. Upon graduating with a Bachelors degree in Sociology, it was a natural evolution for her to become a full time General Manager of Marx Foods.
Katy wears many hats and is responsible for managing the Web site, sourcing new products, online advertising, search engine optimization, chatting with the customers and just about anything else that’s thrown her way.
She discovered her love for food while working as a server for a small European restaurant. The chef and owner, although a little nuts, would let Katy back in the kitchen and taught her how to cook. Apparently the owner was pleased with her cooking skills because after only a few weeks, Katy was doing double-duty, as a server and cook.
Now she loves cooking and hosting small dinner parties. Her favorite thing to make is comfort food (the kind that makes you sleepy and content). Her favorite food to eat is burritos, “it’s like having a delicious Mexican vacation wrapped in a warm tortilla.” And her most memorable eating experience? Her first oyster. A live 2” Pacific oyster. It was peer pressure from the rest of the staff, and after debating if she should chew or simply swallow, she finally got it down. Katy is still bitter they didn’t start her out with a much smaller Virginica oyster!
Katy lives with her husband, Geoff, rambunctious dog Denali, and their cat, Kona in Des Moines. She and Geoff are currently working toward buying a small farm so that they will be able to grow and raise their own food. That is Katy's ultimate goal. When she manages to find spare time she loves sewing and restoring old furniture.
Favorite Fruit: A peach that is so ripe its about 10 minutes from going bad.
Best place to be (other than at the dinner table): On her super-oversized couch that was built for tall people. She’s 5’10” and when she sits on it her feet don’t touch the ground—it’s a wonderful thing.
Not-to-miss restaurant in Seattle: Matt’s in the Market
One thing she wishes she could like, but just doesn’t: Olives. She really despises them, and realizes she’s missing out on the entire Southern Italian food culture, but she’s tried and they just aren’t good.
Coffee order: Katy may be the only person in Seattle who doesn’t drink coffee. She does enjoy coffee flavored things, but not straight, black coffee.
Cooking disaster: She tried to make crab cakes for a party she was having, unfortunately they weren’t much like crab cakes, more like soggy crab mounds. But no one complained!
